Curriculum

The curriculum at Kingsway Infant School is based on a deep understanding of the needs of our children. As a school, we have identified potential barriers to success for our school community and have designed the delivery of our curriculum to address these potential barriers and allow for the best possible attainment for all.  We aim to develop the children's language, spark their interest, deepen their knowledge and develop their curiosity for the ever-changing world around them.  The National Curriculum for Early Years and Key Stage 1 forms the basis for our curriculum, which is planned as a sequence of learning from Reception up to Year 2. This is delivered to allow the children to make links in their learning across all subjects as they progress through the school whilst still having fun!

 

We believe that the core skills of language and communication, reading, writing and maths are fundamental to children achieving well across the curriculum and the structure of our teaching reflects this drive for high attainment in these areas whatever children's starting points may be. We use 'Little Wandle’ for teaching phonics and reading, ‘Essential Maths’ for Maths and ‘HfL Writing’ for writing in KS1.

 

Alongside this lies our passion for creativity and unlocking the potential of all children, developing character and confidence as well as building their knowledge and understanding of their world.   We use ‘Zones of Regulation’ to support our children to recognise their emotions and what they can do to regulate them in order to be the best learner they can be. To support and develop the children’s personal, social and emotional well-being, we use the Jigsaw scheme of learning as a guide to support planning:

‘Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE is an original and comprehensive scheme of learning, which integrates personal, social, health and economic education with an emphasis on emotional literacy, mental health and SMSC, especially spiritual development.  Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world’.

 

We help to develop children’s physical wellbeing and promote a love of sport.  As well as daily ‘walk a mile’ and ‘wake and shake’ sessions, we have developed our play areas to include a ‘trim trail’, climbing wall, activall and apparatus area.  Our reception children have daily outdoor play sessions as well as a PE lesson once a week.  Our KS1 children have two PE lessons per week as well as their active playtimes.
